Officers*

Matt Martinez — President

Matt Martinez is a senior producer at The On Being Project, producing radio shows and podcasts for On Being with Krista Tippett. Previously, he was Director of Content at KNKX Public Radio in Tacoma, WA. He also held a variety of positions at NPR in Washington, D.C., including Senior Producer for NPR Programming and Senior Supervising Producer for All Things ConsideredThe beauty of the Pacific Northwest drew him to Tacoma where he lives within driving distance of his favorite place—Mount Rainier National Park. After years of extended vacations, he finally made the decision to move to the NW after hiking the Wonderland Trail. In addition to his regular hikes, you’ll often find him running trails in Tacoma's Point Defiance Park and riding his bike on the urban trail systems around the region.

Charlie Ann Lieu — Treasurer Orange Hard Hat tiny

Charlie is a professional problem solver, trained engineer, entrepreneur, and management consultant who focuses on strategic operations. As an avid outdoorswoman, Charlie does everything from kayaking to trail riding, but spends most of her time climbing and hiking (so she can get to climbing). She has volunteered with WTA since 2012 on trail maintenance, advocacy, strategy, public outreach, and writing for the Washington Trails magazine.

Todd Dunfield — Secretary  Blue Hard Hat tiny

Todd Dunfield is a volunteer WTA crew leader who lives with his wife and three sons in Spokane. He is a conservation professional who works for the Inland Northwest Land Conservancy where he focuses on community conservation. Todd is passionate about conserving the lands and waters around Spokane and Couer d’Alene. One of his favorite annual WTA traditions is leading the trail maintenance crew that completes the logout on the Salmo Loop in the Salmo-Priest Wilderness.

Jennifer Faubion — VP, Governance

Jenny has been on the trails with her bent shovel and her mules since the age of five. She grew up in the foothills of Mount Rainier where she built trails, bridges and friendships that have spanned decades. She started volunteering with WTA in her youth, helping the Back Country Horsemen of Washington support WTA’s Volunteer Vacations. Jenny now lives in Seattle and works as an attorney at Cairncross & Hempelmann. You can still find her most weekends in the woods with her husband Amit, her daughters and their two dogs, Daisy and Griffey.

Ethan Evans — VP, Philanthropy Green Hard Hat tiny

Ethan is a former Vice President of Technology at Amazon, now focused on giving back through career coaching and environmental advocacy. Ethan is an avid hiker and climber, having climbed most of the volcanic peaks in our region and skied down several of them. Ethan is eager to help WTA become an effective model for other similar organizations across the nation and the globe. Ethan can be hard to find, as he enjoys going to the blank spot on the map and seeing what is there.

At Large Directors*

Trina Baker

Trina is a WA state born and raised but since joining GirlTrek 6 years ago, she's discovered life outdoors through walking, hiking, camping and water recreation. Exploring PNW gems and exposing her community to our backyard is a personal passion!

Michael Dunning

Mike is a Partner at Perkins Coie where he practices environmental law. Mike joined WTA's board in 2015, and also serves on the board of One Less Mountain, serving the needs of homeless veterans. He has hiked, snowshoed and skied all over Washington, and can often be found in the Alpine Lakes wilderness.

Anson Fatland

Anson (he/him) had the good fortune to grow up in the Pacific Northwest. He fell in love with the outdoors from an early age, back in the days of external-frame backpacks and cooking meals over a campfire. While backcountry experiences have changed (thankfully!) his love for the outdoors remains, extending from the local park to the most remote mountain peak. He often spends time outdoors trail running or backcountry skiing. Sometimes in the same trip if he’s lucky. When he’s forced to be indoors, he works at the University of Washington, supporting the translation of research discoveries into impact outside of the academic environment. Anson and his wife have two daughters and they all love the outdoors!

Ashley Fontaine

Ashley is a nonprofit consultant, coach and changemaker. She is a former executive director, and has 14 years of experience as a nonprofit leader. She works most closely with behavioral health and social justice organizations, with a focus on strategic planning, organizational infrastructure, and leadership development to help nonprofits navigate change and deliver on their mission with integrity to their community. She lives in north Seattle with her favorite hiking partner, her dog Molly. She loves sunset photography and any chance to capture the beauty of the Pacific Northwest on camera, and can often be found hiking back down in the dark with the assistance of her trusty headlamp.

Thomas Goldstein

Thomas is a private sector and philanthropic strategist and consultant.  He works with an array of real estate, restaurant and tech companies all of whom enhance economic vitality across Washington. Previously, Thomas served as Executive Director of the Washington Bus and was the founder of The Service Board. He is a fan of the craggy peaks of the Alpine Lakes Wilderness but the Olympia Peninsula is calling his name.

Sully Moreno Blue Hard Hat tiny

Sully (she/her) was born and raised in Panama City, Panama, and she has called Washington her second home since 2012. She loves to hike, backpack, swim, and create outdoor experiences that are inclusive and welcoming. She had the honor to lead WTA's Latina Youth Trail Crew in 2019 and to spend a week at Mount Rainier National Park with a bright group of Latina teenagers building connections to nature and to each other. Sully works as a community engagement and racial equity consultant at her own practice, Culture Shift Consulting. In her spare time, she volunteers with Latino Outdoors and Sustainable Seattle, and she sits on the King County Equity Cabinet. One of Sully's fondest memories is reaching the peak of Panama’s tallest mountain, Volcán Barú, with her parents and sister.

Ken Myer Green Hard Hat tiny

Ken’s lifelong passion is hiking and backpacking, from his early days in the Boy Scouts to later years camping with family and friends. When he’s not in the mountains, Ken serves as an Interim Executive for companies going through organizational transitions and is also a leadership lecturer at the UW Foster School of Business. Ken has spent his career in the technology industry, including roles in companies both large and small, and a stint as CEO of the Washington Technology Industry Association.  He loves the high country, whether in the Cascades, Olympics or Sierra, and admits to a weakness for cool camping gear.

Alanna Peterson

Alanna Peterson is a partner at Pacifica Law Group, where she helps public and nonprofit clients navigate complex constitutional and statutory issues that impact our region. Her most treasured memories are time spent outside and on trails with the people she cares about, and she is committed to ensuring everyone has access to those same opportunities for meaning-making and connection. She has served on state and local initiatives to preserve and fund parks, trails, and open space and has provided pro bono legal support to WTA and various other conservation and outdoor recreation organizations over the years, among other civic commitments. You can find her most (early!) mornings chasing her toddler around the urban trail system in Seattle, alongside her husband, Brian, and their rescue dog, Greta

Arun Sambataro

Professional change-maker. Rebel. Engaged advocate for equity, racial justice and social justice. Arun is the Equity Strategies Manager for King County’s Executive Office, Office of Equity and Social Justice; she advances equity and racial justice by overseeing strategic plan implementation, providing policy analysis for major Executive initiatives, and develops the Office’s budget. For Arun, hiking, backpacking, climbing and kayaking offer personal peace, challenge and adventure. She and her husband Joe have hiked and climbed worldwide, but they love the Cascades and Olympics so much, they had these mountains engraved in their wedding bands! Arun is committed to ensuring equity in accessing, preserving and using the outdoors; she is thrilled to advance WTA’s mission with a strong focus on equity and social justice. Someday, Arun hopes to summit Mount Athena in the Olympics — a goal she’s held since her first date with her husband.

Jennifer Surapisitchat

Jenn is a Seattle native who has developed a love for trails and hiking over the past 15+ years. She’s a University of Washington alumni who dived into sales and later recruiting over the course of her professional career. Most recently, she has accepted a role as a Recruitment Marketing Strategist for Nestle USA. Jenn brings a natural and organic love for sharing her hiking adventures on Washington trails through social media channels, inspiring many to explore as well. She’s a passionate athlete of life, practicing yoga, longboard skating, weight training, and trying new local restaurants and bars.
