WTA's hiking community: from Seattle to Australia

Margie from Australia talks about how WTA made her time in Seattle so rewarding.

Did you know that WTA's hiking community extends beyond Washington to Oregon, Idaho, across the country, into Canada, even as far as the Netherlands and Australia?

When Margie Brewer first moved to Seattle from the east coast of Australia she was completely overwhelmed by the volume of fantastic hikes in the area. She was like a kid in a candy store, what with so many mountains to choose from. Not knowing where to begin, she started online and came across the WTA website.

At first, "The Trip Reports page on WTA's website was my favorite resource (actually, come to think of it, it's still my favorite...). It helped point me in the right direction to start getting out there and up those many mountains," says Margie.

A year later, she began volunteering in the WTA office and on trail work parties. "My experiences volunteering is when I really started to get some great tips about places to visit and trails to hike. My list of “Hikes to do before going back to Australia” grew faster than I could cross trails off. It’s amazing what office and trail work banter can teach you, and how many great ideas you can get from those similarly minded people around you at WTA."

Margie went back to Australia last winter, but "WTA's people and their shared experiences are why I'm a member of this great organization, and continue to be back here in Australia. As well as following the Trip Reports, I love the magazine that arrives every two months in my mailbox, and the chance to remember just how lucky I was to spend time in the Pacific Northwest."

Thanks Margie, for your continued dedication to trails and thank you to all our members. The WTA hiking community just wouldn't be the same without you!
