The first in a series of public open houses for the Teanaway Community Forest has been scheduled for Thursday, June 26 from 5:30pm-8:00pm at the Swauk-Teanaway Grange.
Designated as Washington state’s first community forest, the 50,000-acre Teanaway Community Forest was purchased by the state from a private seller last fall and is a cornerstone of the Yakima Basin Integrated Plan. With the help of an advisory committee (WTA is a member), the departments of Natural Resources and Fish and Wildlife must develop a plan for managing the forest by June 30, 2015.
Currently there are no designated trails in the Teanaway Community Forest. WTA is a strong advocate for a designated trail system for hikers and other recreationists.
The June 26th public open house will gather input from members of the community regarding the future of the forest, including asking participants to identify what they like to do on the forest and what activities should take place on the forest.
Show your support for trails at the June 26 meeting
The Teanaway Community Forest Advisory Committee and the state agencies are looking for community feedback regarding the future of the forest -– including if the forest should have a designated trail system for nonmotorized activities like hiking and motorized recreation such as dirt biking. The meeting on June 26 is a great way to participate in shaping what the forest will become in the future.
