Wildlife Spotting: Velella Velella on Olympic Coast

Trip reporter lildoppler recently hiked the Sand Point portion of the Ozette Triangle Loop and spotted some of the gorgeous Velella velella that have been making headlines by showing up en masse on Washington's coast.

The creatures are a relative of anemones, corals and jellyfish. Their unusual upright structure helps them sail across the surface of the ocean. Another trip reporter spotted them on beaches at the Westport Light Trail.
