Lake Serene Trail Goal Met, Land Won't Be Logged

With your help, our partners at Forterra have reached their goal of raising $275,000 in order to purchase the land surrounding the beginning of the Lake Serene Trail and protect it from being logged.

As we reported earlier last month the Lake Serene trail, which begins on an old logging road bed, traverses through private property owned by Weyerhaeuser, a Washington-based timber company. Weyerhaeuser plans to log its property, including a portion of land that surrounds a section of the Lake Serene trail. The logging activity will close the trail sometime this winter until July 1, 2018.

To prevent the logging adjacent to the trail, Forterra worked closely with the landowner to negotiate a sale of the section of land in question. Weyerhaeuser agreed to sell off a 190-acre parcel of land including the small section which the trail traverses, as well as creating a buffer of trees along the trail corridor. With the help of individuals, foundations, and partners, Forterra was able to secure the funds to purchase the land from Weyerhaeuser and put a stop to logging surrounding the trail.

Thanks to the more than 600 hikers and climbers that donated to Forterra's efforts, as well as the 1,000 activists who spoke up for this trail. In honor of those 1,000 advocates, WTA also committed $1,000 to the acquisition. Thanks to you, the trees around the Lake Serene trail will be protected from logging, and public access to the trail will never be at risk.
