The World Belongs To Those Who Show Up

The title of this post is a political truism that has the benefit of actually being true. When you attend a public meeting, write a letter to an agency or to an elected official or otherwise step up and be counted, you shift the calculus by which important decisions are made.

You have an opportunity to show up this Saturday.

The Okanogan-Wenatchee and Colville National Forests are busy creating Forest Plans - overarching documents that guide trail and road maintenance and wilderness recommendations for a decade or more.

The forests are holding a public meeting at the Seattle Mountaineers this Saturday, August 13, from 10:00 am-12:00 pm. The event will be followed by a community cookout, sponsored by The Mountaineers, The Sierra Club, WTA, Conservation Northwest and Washington Wilderness Coalition. The cookout will go from 12:30 - 2:30 pm, during which you'll have an opportunity to meet with other hikers, share favorite hikes on the Okanogan-Wenatchee and Colville and find out what you can do to help make these forests even better places to hike.

I'm fully aware that I'm asking you to attend a meeting on a Saturday in August. But think about this for a moment - if you show up on this beautiful summer weekend day, you'll be taking a step that will help ensure many, many more beautiful days of hiking on the Okanogan-Wenatchee and Colville for you and others for years to come.
