Sun + Volunteers = Great Day

On one of the most beautiful Saturdays of the entire hiking season, more than 120 WTA volunteers joined one of seven work parties that celebrated National Public Lands Day. With the sun shining brightly and WTA hardhats everywhere, it was a fitting tribute to a day designed to celebrate and recognize service and recreation on our public lands.

So what did all of these fabulous volunteers accomplish? Quite a bit, as it turns out!

• Volunteers from the Spokane area came out to the Iller Creek Trail project where they completed 800 feet of brushing and worked on a trail re-route along the West Fork of Iller Creek.
  

• In Southwest Washington, volunteers chose between a project on the June Lake trail in the Mt St Helens National Volcanic Monument or on the Lake Christine Trail in the Glacier View Wilderness. The Lake Christine crew worked primarily on heavy tread reconstruction, while the June Lake volunteers improved drainage by installing water bars and a culvert. 
  

• Thirty Puget Sound volunteers descended on the McClellan Butte Trail off the I-90 corridor to improve a recently constructed portion of trail, removing debris and spreading gravel to harden the surface.
  

• On the Olympic Peninsula, volunteers put finishing touches on a re-route of the South Fork Skokomish Trail downstream from Camp Comfort.
  

• Up north, volunteers continued to make progress on a new trail to the top of Guemes Island within the San Juan Islands. 
  

• And, last but not least, volunteers wrapped up another successful season at Mount Rainier working on the Glacier Basin Trail re-route.
