Runners Go the Distance for Trails
How the trail running community and a gorgeous calendar helped raise 30K for Washington's trails.
Washington Trails Association extends a hearty “Thank You” to Glenn Tachiyama, Wendy Wheeler Jacobs, and all those involved in the 2016 “Tribute to Trails” calendar project.
“Tribute to Trails” is a wall calendar made for trail runners and anyone else who appreciates Washington’s incredibly scenic trails. Inspiring images of runners on trails around the state are paired with a unique and useful calendar of trail running events and race dates taking place throughout the year.
Trail runner and photographer Glenn Tachiyama and trail runner and WTA board member Wendy Wheeler Jacobs started the project twelve years ago as a fundraiser for WTA. The project is truly a labor of love. Glenn was looking for a way to use his skills as a way to give back to Washington’s beautiful wild places. So every year, Glenn and Wendy create the calendar and distribute it to running stores for sale.
A community-wide effort
Glenn and Wendy take pride that their project is entirely volunteer-based, which means 100 percent of the proceeds from sales are donated to WTA. Its success is dependent on amazing community support. Sponsors and contributors donate funds to underwrite the printing and shipping costs, while running stores and race organizations volunteer their time to sell the calendars and race directors donate race entries for a drawing that helps generate more sales.
This year’s donation is $30,510, bringing their 12-year accumulated total to $205,340. Wow!
Many thanks to Glenn, Wendy, and the trail running community for helping keep trails open and accessible for everyone who loves to explore.
Thanks, Sponsors
WTA joins Glenn and Wendy in thanking Hoka One One, Cascade Crest 100 Mile Endurance Run, Destination Trail, Drymax Socks, Evergreen Trail Runs, Northwest Trail Runs, Pacific Coast Trail Runs, Rainshadow Running and White River 50M for sponsoring the calendar, the running stores for volunteering their time and support, the race directors/running clubs that contributed additional dollars and race entries and the athletes and trails who made the images possible.
