Advocate for Trails at Lake Whatcom on Nov. 5

There’s a possibility for new trails on Lookout Mountain and next to Lake Whatcom and Whatcom County needs to hear from you.

On Thursday, Nov. 5, Whatcom County will be holding a meeting to discuss this issue. Earlier this year, Whatcom County Parks & Recreation proposed three concepts for trail plans at Lake Whatcom Park ranging from 18 miles to more than 55 miles of new trail.

WTA has been advocating for these trails since the process began in 2014. This spring, we asked hikers to contact Whatcom County to champion increased trail miles around the lake and to prioritize sustainability.

Here's what the county has to say about the meeting:

"The Reconveyance lands are envisioned to provide non-motorized recreation opportunities with hiking, biking and horseback riding trails connecting the various communities, neighborhoods and parks throughout the watershed. Under County ownership, the forests will be allowed to mature to an older growth environment benefiting the watershed and helping to stabilize the many steep slopes that surround the lake."

How you can help

Whatcom County needs to hear from you as this process moves forward. Attend the meeting with WTA and use your voice for trails:

Even if you don't want to submit comments, just being in the room with WTA helps show that hikers are invested in this process.
