If you're like me, you get a big smile on your face when Washington Trails magazine appears in your mailbox. Even though I get a sneak peek, I read it from cover to cover as soon as I can - usually on the bus on my way to WTA!

I really enjoyed the issue - especially Eli Boschetto's article about hiking in the Columbia River Gorge. He mentions many amazing trails on both sides of the river, and word has it that this area is in full wildflower bloom right now. I'm a big fan of the Washington side of the Gorge - it's open, sunny, flowery, with amazing views of the Columbia River. We have the Washington hikes Eli mentions in our Hiking Guide - Hamilton Mountain, Dog Mountain, Cape Horn, and Coyote Wall - and 18 more as well. Get thee to the Gorge now!

Joan Burton's article on glaciers makes me long for summer. There's nothing more refreshing than the cold breeze off of a glacial snowfield on a hot day of hiking. Joan gives us the lowdown on glaciers and where you can hike to them. You'll have to wait for the snow to melt for these hikes, but I highly recommend the Easton Glacier via the Scott Paul Trail and Carbon Glacier.

Finally, we come to Mount St. Helens. May 18th is the 30th anniversary of an eruption that forever changed the landscape of the region. Ryan Ojerio and Susan Saul's article provides an excellent look at the history of the mountain and the efforts to protect it over the years. Return to our website in mid-May for descriptions of ten excellent hikes and backpacks in and around the Mount St. Helen's National Monument.
