Last winter, Christina Benton took to the road with her three kids (who are homeschooled), for a 64-day trek across the country. Her goal: to share America's national parks with her children, and to raise awareness about the Park Service's lack of visitors who look like her family.

Before her trip, Benton, who writes the blog Nomadic Mama of 3, had been to 43 sites in the National Park System, but this was the first time they'd been to the West and Southwest sections of the country. Her kids loved the trip -- White Sand Dunes was a favorite spot.

The trip was greeted with unanimous approval wherever they went. It also sparked discussion between Benton and the Park Service, pushing back about the misconception that "brown people don't participate in the outdoors."
