Lake Serene Closed Until July 1

This popular trail in Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest will be closed until the first of July due to nearby logging activity.

Starting this week, the Forest Service will temporarily close the popular Lake Serene trailhead and trail due to nearby logging activity. The trail is set to reopen on July 1.

As we reported earlier, a portion of land around the Lake Serene trail traverses through private property owned by Weyerhaeuser, a Washington-based timber company. This winter, Weyerhaeuser began the logging process on their property near the Lake Serene trail. To ensure public safety, access to the trail and trailhead will be temporarily closed while the logging occurs.

Thankfully, with the help of Forterra and over 600 generous donors, Forterra was able to purchase a portion of the property directly adjacent to the Lake Serene trail and prevent a vital section of trail from being logged. Due to the sale, the logging activity will now leave 500-foot forested buffers around the trail corridor and leave the parking lot and bathrooms even better than before.

With a 500 foot buffer on each side of the trail, why does it need to be closed for "nearby logging"? There are no logging roads that cross the trail ... ?

Not Yet Old Hiker on Lake Serene Closed Until July 1

I agree with Mountaincraft. Why close the trail if we got a 500 buffer? Will someone from WTA please reply?

Hi Mountaincraft and Not Yet Old Hiker - although the trail itself will not be logged, nearby logging activity in addition to trucks and equipment moving in and out of the trailhead will cause a public safety concern. Until the logging is complete, the trail must remain closed.

If you have more questions about the closure, you can contact the Skykomish Ranger District at (360) 677-2414.

Does anyone know where the closure starts to get to the trail head and if 4WD rigs can get around it? I still plan on hiking this soon. Weyerhaeuser is not going to stop me just because they want to kill a bunch of trees.
