Hikers lost a real friend with the recent passing of WTA member John Wright of University Place. News reports indicate that he fell while on a solo hike of Green Mountain, in the North Bend area, last Friday. By all accounts, John, an experienced hiker, lived for the outdoors.

Many wta.org visitors may know John by his screen name Tomas. Over the years, he has submitted more than 100 trip reports of his adventures, and made WTA's list of top trip reporters for 2011. Many of us in the WTA office looked forward reading to his reports. I am sure we were not alone in this appreciation. They were filled with just the right amount of trail data, to be sure. More memorably, they captured his exuberant love of our mountains, and showed his kindness toward fellow hikers.

Our deepest condolences go out to all of John's family and friends.

Great picture of him

It would seem he had a passion for hiking so I will celebrate his life as a fellow hiker by remembering him each time I reach the top of another one of our great peaks, alpine lakes or when filling out another trip report to let other people know the love and passion we have for hiking.

RIP

R.I.P. Tomas. I too always looked forward to finding your trail reports in the 'freshest' reports. So very sad.

RIP Tomas

Wow, I'm stunned. Although I only knew him from his posts and a few brief exchanges of comments, I always thought of John as something of a kindred spirit out and I always looked forward to his reports. He liked the same kinds of hikes that I did, and I often scoured his trip reports for new places to go. I'm so sorry for his family's loss. He clearly loved being in these mountains and I know he passed with a happy heart.
