It’s February 23. WTA went to Hike the Hill in Washington, D.C., last week to advocate for our trails! Dog Mountain permits go on sale starting March 1. The Hurricane Ridge Day Lodge is closing some of its visitor services for the season. Heart O’ the Hills campground and trail are closing for construction. Be prepared for water at some campgrounds to be turned off due to freezing temperatures. And expect more snow and freezing temperatures at low elevations across the state. Here’s some news you may have missed while out on trail this week.

Hike the Hill: Jaime Loucky, WTA's CEO, and Michael DeCramer, WTA's policy and planning manager, spent last week in Washington D.C. at Hike the Hill meeting with leaders of federal land management agencies to talk about WTA's vision of Trails for Everyone. WTA staff advocated for consistent funding to our federal partners and land managers for maintenance of our public lands. We also expressed support for efforts to help make the outdoors more accessible like the Outdoors for All Act and the Transit to Trails Act.

Dog Mountain permits go on sale: Dog Mountain permits will be available to book online starting March 1, which allow a permit-holder a full day on the Dog Mountain trail system. Permits — one per person — are required for use every Saturday and Sunday from April 23 through June 12 and on Memorial Day, Monday, May 30.

Visitor center services closing: Food, gift and rental services at Hurricane Ridge Day Lodge will close through the winter season starting Friday to prepare for the upcoming construction projects. Visitors will need to bring their own food, drink and gear.

Campground and trail closure: The Heart O’ the Hills campground and trail will be closed for a construction project from March 1 through May 12. The project will involve upgrading piping and the sewage collection system at the campground.

Possible campground water shut-offs: Be aware that due to freezing temperatures, water at campsites in car campgrounds may be turned off

Lowland snow and freezing temps: We’re looking at some chilly conditions even at low elevations next week! Be safe if you choose to drive in snowy or icy conditions, pack the right gear and have a backup plan if conditions are too sketchy.
