It's Feb. 20. A new study shows that investing in trails can pay off in a big way for states. A new, safe route lets folks more easily hike to Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge. And you can have your say about the Navy's request to use state parks for train.

Science says we need trails: A new scientific study shows what hikers already know: Trails are good for people, good for communities and good for the economy. The study details the benefits trails provide by improving people’s health and reducing health care costs, among other benefits. The study shows that trails are a good investment for the state.

An easy walk to nature: Hiker can now easily and safely make their way from Ridgefield to the Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge. The previous connection between the two was a dangerous road-side walk. Now, there’s a safe route and hikers can enjoy a 4.8 mile loop that goes to the refuge as well as the city’s waterfront.

Navy wants to train in state parks: The U.S. Navy has submitted a request to expand training operations to 29 Washington State Parks. Currently, the Navy has a permit, which expires in May, to do training at five state parks. There will be a public meeting about the Navy’s request on May 6 in Port Townsend. In the meantime, you can read more about the request and share your opinions online.
