Some hardy teens have embarked on a mission to tackle 5 weeks of trailwork. And WTA is excited to cut the ribbon on a new connector trail in Olympia.

Here’s some hiker news you might have missed while out on the trail this week:

Tackling tough trails: A crew of 9 teens hit the trail this week for an extended backcountry stay in the Pasayten Wilderness. They’re on the Chewuch River Trail and will be working over the next 5 weeks to build connector routes to the nearby Boundary Trail and Pacific Northwest Trail.

Bring on the sun: The weekend starts with Friday’s summer solstice; we hope you enjoy a stretch of serious sunlight. Check out WTA’s latest trip reports to find a perfect early-summer hike, and relish the extra-long adventuring time. (And file a trip report of your own when you’re done!)

Trailhead closure: The gate at the Mt. Jupiter Trailhead  in the Olympic National Forest is closed for the foreseeable future due to nearby logging. For safety reasons, cars can’t be parked at the gate and hikers aren’t allowed to access the trailhead by foot.

Building connections: Austin Easter, a long time WTA crew leader, will be cutting the ribbon to officially open the new NE Neighborhood Connection Trail, a WTA-built trail that connects the Northeast Neighborhood in Olympia to Priest Point Park. The ceremony is at 9 a.m. Saturday on Howard Avenue NE.

I don't know how to add a story item but the BLM is holding two "listening sessions" in the Tri-Cities (5:30-8:30 p.m. on July 22 and 9 a.m.-1 p.m. July 23 at the Red Lion Columbia Center in Kennewick, 1101 N. Columbia Center Blvd) to decide what to do with the Juniper Dunes Wilderness Area! They seem to think they can make it a haven for off-roaders. WTA members and all lovers of Wilderness areas need to speak out. Read more here: https://www.tri-cityherald.com/news/local/article231768413.html?#storylink=cpy .
