Hiker Headlines: Spring, State Parks Director, Federal Budget

It's March 24. Spring has officially sprung! Washington State Parks will welcome a new director next week. And, we take a look at how the federal budget shaped up for trails. Here’s some news you may have missed while out on trail this week.

Shifting seasons: The first full weekend of spring is upon us! The sun is staying out longer, temperatures are creeping up and flowers are beginning to bud. Before you set out on trail to soak up the season, check out our spring safety tips and take a peek at some of our favorite spring trails. After your hike, help other hikers by writing a trip report and sharing the latest in trail conditions.

New leadership: Last week, the Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission announced Diana Dupuis as the agency’s new director. Dupuis has dedicated over 14 years to the agency, currently serving as the region manager in Spokane. She will step into the director role on April 1.

Federal budget: Congress recently finalized a federal budget for the 2022 fiscal year. The budget includes increased investments in the Forest Service, but the numbers still fall short of what the agency requested.
