New partnership: WTA is excited to announce a new partnership with the Western Washington Honda Dealers. Western Washington Honda Dealers are WTA’s largest corporate partner to date, funding essential work to meet WTA’s vision of trails for everyone, forever. As the presenting partner of WTA, the Western Washington Honda Dealers will provide a complimentary WTA membership to everyone who purchases or leases a new Honda in 2023.
New funding: $1.1 million was allocated to Washington’s three national parks — Mount Rainier, North Cascades and Olympic — by Washington’s National Park Fund earlier this week. This funding will support various projects, including work on the Wonderland Trail at Mount Rainier National Park, more programming at North Cascades National Park and the development of youth programs in Olympic National Park. There are also additional funds for other projects that come up later.
Trail development: King County Parks celebrated the start of the next phase of development for the Foothills Trail, building a bridge to connect Enumclaw to Buckley over the White River. This trail will eventually connect Enumclaw to Puyallup.
New names: The Washington State Department of Natural Resources’s Committee of Geographic Names approved four proposals to rename four features in Garfield, Okanogan and Mason counties that contained derogatory terms. Two of the new names honor early Kitsap Peninsula Black settlers, one name was taken from the nearby Tucannon River and the last was named after the gooseberry, which grows in the area.
Snowy forecast: Heading up to the mountains this weekend? There’s snow predicted at the major passes this weekend, so make sure to check road conditions and avalanche conditions before you go, and write up a trip report when you get back.
