Four Trails That Need Your Help in July

This month WTA is working in several locations that need some special attention, and we'd love to have your help! Join us for a day full of safety, fun, and work, and make your mark on the trails you love.

Puget Sound - Evans Creek Preserve

Help WTA and the City of Sammamish establish a trail system on its newest park property. Formerly farmland, the park is home to 179 acres of wetland, wooded uplands, and wide open fields. After helping complete two miles of trail earlier this year, our work parties are moving onto building a trail connecting the fields to the uplands. In addition to new trail construction, you may get the chance to build some structures, including bridges or turnpike.

Eastern Washington - Mount Spokane State Park

Mount Spokane has many great hiking, biking, and equestrian trails -- day hikes that easily accommodate all interests and abilities. Because the trails are used year-round, they require frequent maintenance to withstand the impact of feet, tires, and hooves that visit this area.

For this project we will be working the #130 trail between the Bald Knob Picnic Area and the CCC cabin; the section with the best views. We have a lot of brushing, drainage and tread work to do on this trail to help the park on their endeavor to upgrade these trails.

Southwest Washington - Whipple Creek 1/2 Day

It's time to start digging! A new trail project is underway at Whipple Creek and WTA crews will be putting in a new tread base for a trail that will eventually be graveled. Come lend a hand and help build a meandering path through a tall cottonwood forest bordered by wetlands. In addition to creating new tread, we'll be brushing along the new trail corridor.

Northwest Washington - Skyline Divide

Leading to wide-open meadows and stunning views of Mount Baker, this is one of the most popular hikes in the area. Join WTA for general maintenance like cleaning drain dips, clearing brush, and realigning some sections of trail that are slumping. You may also get the chance to do some construction; worn and rooty sections of trail sometimes require more than a simple realignment.
