Hiking Willapa National Wildlife Refuge - Long Island

The Willapa National Wildlife Refuge is a haven of quiet in the southwest corner of Washington, just north of Astoria. Long Island is a section of the refuge that is especially quiet, since it's only accessible by boat.

Explore 10-plus miles of trails with access to beaches, meadows, and forest - one favorite among families who get here is the Don Bonker Cedar Grove, a mile-long loop hike through a 275- acre cedar grove with trees over 900 years old. Note that getting to the loop requires a longer access hike, hence the mileage listed here of 6 miles.

To access Don Bonker, land on the southern tip of Long Island and follow the center road north. The trail to the grove is about 2.5 miles from the landing.that wends around huge Western redcedars.

Also note that there is no fresh water on the island; you'll have to bring all you need if you decide to camp. You will want to carry a tide table so you do not become stranded at low tide, and dogs are not permitted on the island.
