Mount Rainier's Westside Road is closed in winter at the junction with Highway 706, making this road showshoe more than 11 miles roundtrip.
From the junction, make your way along the road as it follows Tahoma Creek. Five miles in, a turnoff leads to Round Pass, Gobblers Knob, and Mount Beljica to the west. To the east lie the South Puyallup Trail, Emerald Ridge the Wonderland Trail.
The Westside Road is an easy snowshoe with a gently uphill grade for the most part (it is a road, after all). However, always be aware of potential avalanche hazards, particularly in the first mile of the hike, since the road has been closed for several years due to rockfall from the cliffs above the road near the junction for 706.
