It doesn’t get better than Stuart Island if you want to combine a quaint little hiking trip with sea kayaking, camping and wildlife watching.
Enjoy the dramatic setting of this historic lighthouse and gaze out across Boundary Pass towards the Canadian Gulf Islands.
Watch for river otters, harbor seals, and if you time it right, orca whales cruising in the waters just offshore. The trail starts at Stuart Island State Park, above the dock ramp on Reid Harbor.
Head left (north) on the Prevost Loop and wind your way down towards the head of Reid Harbor. The trail intersects the “road” here (no need to be wary of traffic!) and continues northwest towards the Stuart Island School. The original building is now a museum.
Just past the schoolhouse, on the left, is the tiny Stuart Island cemetery, also worth a side visit. Continuing north along the road, you’ll arrive at a T-junction (turning right will bring you to the Prevost Harbor dock).
Turn left, and after a little over a mile you’ll arrive at the Turn Point Lighthouse on land now designated as part of the San Juan Islands National Monument.
Return back the way you came, or to make a loop, follow the road to Prevost Harbor and return to Reid Harbor by way of a short connecting trail.

Getting There
Stuart Island is only accessible by watercraft. Most visitors arrive by kayak or other private boats. Check with the Bureau of Land Management for more details. To use the dock, a mooring buoy, or camp at the State Park campground in Reid/Prevost Harbors, you will need a daily permit, available on site. There is no fee to enter the National Monument Land.
