Take the Trail Creek Trail through dry forest on the east side of the Cascade Range. A large fire burned through here more than 100 years ago, opening up the forest and offering views through the remaining trees of the surrounding mountains.
Trail Creek Trail connects with the Waptus River Trail to gain access to beautiful, big Waptus Lake. Other destinations lie at junctions along the way -- 2.1 miles from the trailhead, a turnoff for Squaw Lake and Cathedral Rock promise a beautiful day hike, while further along, the Lake Michael Trail offers exploration of a beautiful high alpine lake.
Waptus Lake is certainly the most popular destination for those hiking the Trail Creek Trail, and WTA crews have worked in past years to improve it for those seeking a weekend backcountry escape.
