Hiking Thunder Woods Nature Trail

Hiking the North Cascades is a treat for all ages. This short nature trail leads through forest above the turquoise waters of the Thunder Arm of Diablo Lake, offering a taste of moss-draped old growth with moderate elevation gain. In season, mushrooms abound. With its low elevation, it is generally open year-round.

When the Colonial Creek Campground is open south of Highway 20, this trail is readily accessed from the southernmost point of the campground; otherwise, a short hike from the parking lot is required. Look for the amphitheater to find this trail. Wander southward on the Thunder Creek trail for a hundred yards or so. Bypass the first turnoff — the second one has a sign for the nature trail.

This trail can be looped either way. Modest elevation gain with good footing winds through old growth and mossy, draped cedars. Watch for mushrooms in the autumn and the first flowers in the spring. This trail is suitable for all ages and abilities. Some may choose to take trekking poles for the talus section.
