South Skookum Lake Trail

This trail completely encircles South Skookum Lake, a quiet fee-campground in Pend Oreille County. Since the campground is managed by a concessionaire, there is a $5 day-use fee for those not staying in the campground.

It's a small lake but popular for fishing. When I was here the campground wasn't open yet (so the fee hadn't gone into effect) but I think they'll open the campground around Memorial Day Weekend.

The trailhead is next to the boat ramp area at South Skookum Lake Campground. It is a 1.3-mile long loop featuring a 0.3 mile spur trail, following the west and south shoreline of the lake and offers scenic views of the lake.

For hikers interested in wildlife, deer and moose can frequently be spotted along the edge of the lake. The trail is very well maintained and boasts bridges over wet areas.

Other small forest animals and birds can also be observed along the trail. Five benches, which were installed by a local boy scout troop are scattered along the trail and offer visitors an opportunity to stop and enjoy the scenery.
