Hiking Silesia Creek

This is a lightly used trail located at the end of the Twin Lakes Road, #3065. Check out some of the local mining history on this trail that drops 2600' to Silesia Creek and the site of a former forest service shelter. Miners once used this trail to bring out gold from the many claims along the creek.

Begin your approximately 4.5 mile descent at the lovely Twin Lakes with views of Mt. Larrabee and American Border Peak. The trail has been cleared of blowdowns and brush in 2012, though it might still be a little rugged in places. Chances of seeing wildlife are pretty good, and finding solitude is not a problem on this seldom used trail. Check out this hike for a break from the crowds at Winchester Lookout and Twin Lakes.

Getting There

From Glacier, travel east on Mt. Baker Highway SR 542. Turn left onto Twin Lakes Road #3065 at the east end of the Department of Transportation's Shuksan maintenance facility. After 4.5 miles, you'll pass the Tomyhoi Lake/Yellow Aster Butte Trailhead and parking area. The road beyond this point is narrow and is not maintained for passenger vehicles. High clearance vehicles can negotiate the remaining 2 miles to Twin Lakes. Check with the Glacier Public Service Center for road conditions before heading out. The Twin Lakes Trailhead is located 6.5 miles from the highway between the two lakes.
