Hiking Shoeffler Butte-Heyburn State Park

This trail in Idaho’s Heyburn State Park starts off on a remnant of a historic wagon road, then winds through ponderosa pine forests to top out on Shoeffler Butte.

The trail starts off on the historic Mullan Road and climbs a little under a mile to the official start of the Shoeffler Butte Trail. As you climb, you’ll get occasional views of the south end of Lake Coeur d’Alene.

The Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes, a 70-mile multi-use path popular with cyclists, runs close to the start of this trail, creating the opportunity for a bike-and-hike, or a continuation of your hike.

Getting There

From I-90 just west of Coeur d’Alene, head south on Highway 95 for about 28 miles, then turn left onto West Conkling Road. After 5.7 miles this will turn into Chatcolet Road, which you stay on for another 1.3 miles, then turn left onto Chatcolet Upper Road for 0.2 mile, turning left again to stay on this for another 0.2 mile.
