Hiking Shepperd's Dell State Natural Area

This charming little area, complete with waterfall, makes a nice stop on the drive on Highway 30 in the Columbia River Gorge. It was gifted to the city of Portland In 1915 by a local dairy farmer as a memorial to his wife.

The short trail leads to a waterfall cascading down steep cliffs into Youngs Creek which flows to the Columbia River. The upper falls is 42 feet tall and the lower falls is 50 feet tall. It's a short hike -- you'd want to loop it in with other hikes in the area, but it's notable for its history and the bridge. Crossing over a small wooded valley (the dell), it is one of the prettiest bridges along the Historic Columbia River Highway.

You also may see some wildflowers on your visit. Chickweed, monkeyflower, small-flowered Blue-eyed Mary and fringe cup, among others, may be seen along the short walk to the falls.
