Hiking Shedroof Cutoff

The Shedroof Cutoff Trail serves as a short feeder trail to the Shedroof Divide Trail in the Salmo Priest Wilderness. By itself it isn't much, with a total one-way distance of 1.8 miles, the first 1.2 miles of which is an old roadbed. But when utilized as a segment to gain access to the Shedroof Divide, this short trail can open up miles of possibilities for connected loops and longer out-and-backs, both as day hikes and as multi-day backpack trips.

At the 1 mile mark, the trail crosses Sullivan Creek. This is normally a boots or shoes off crossing, and may be tricky as the snow melts off the high country in the early spring. A quarter mile after the creek crossing the trail makes a sharp right turn off the old roadbed and soon thereafter enters the Salmo Priest Wilderness.

The Shedroof Cutoff joins the Shedroof Divide Trail at the 13 mile mark of its 21.8 mile length. At this same intersection, Hughes Fork Trail 313 drops eastward into the Idaho Panhandle National Forest.

The shortest popular loop route (approximately 15 miles) is to combine the Shedroof Cutoff with the Shedroof Divide southbound as far as Thunder Creek, and exit via the Thunder Creek Trail (the trailhead for which is approximately 0.5 miles from the Shedroof Cutoff trailhead for an easy road-hike to connect the loop). Much longer routes are also available.
