The Sa Teekh Wa Trail is a two-mile interpretive trail along the Chewuch River from downtown Winthrop. The trail is easily accessed from a bridge at the northwest end of Winthrop's boardwalk. Hiking Sa Teekh Wa Trail

Just a short walk from downtown Winthrop, this riverside stroll is perfect for families or just a place to relax and unwind. Accessing the trail from downtown involves crossing a fun suspension foot bridge. This bridge crosses the Chewuch River at the site of a former log mill.

Follow the trail for about 0.4 mile upstream. An old weir, just above some rocky rapids marks the end of the trail. The trail follows the inside bend of the river. Prone to flooding this area bares the scars of past floods. Cottonwoods are mixed with a few Ponderosas and the ground is thick with saskatoon, snowbrush, and other shrubs.

Spend some time reading the signboards and soaking in the atmosphere. Bring a lunch and spend some time to appreciate why native people gathered here. Until the arrival of white settlers to the Methow Valley this location was a common gathering place for the native community.

When your batteries have recharged follow the trail back to the bridge. Be sure to read the signboard which talks about irrigation water and how it crosses under the Chewuch River!

Getting There

For the sake of businesses in downtown Winthrop, please do not park in downtown while you do this hike. If you are coming from the west on Highway 20, watch for “Public Parking” at the barn before the center of town; this will add ½ mile of walk to access the beginning of the trail.

From the barn’s parking lot (or continuing to drive) go over the Chewuch River and turn left at the stop sign in the center of town. This is Riverside Drive. Follow this a quarter mile to a righthand bend where the street changes to Bluff Street.

The footbridge to cross the river is about 100 yards beyond the turn. Street parking is available but please park away from businesses!
