Hiking Rock Creek

A trail providing a connection between the crest of the Cascades near Snoqualmie and the Middle Fork River valley. You'll need route-finding gear and equipment, as well as plenty of stamina to hike this one.

Start at the trail junction at milepost 8.5 on Middle Fork Trail 1003. Switchback up through staid trees of a second-growth forest that was logged in the 1930s -- the Middle Fork trail follows the old railbed.

Soon enter virgin trees near the Alpine Lakes Wilderness boundary. The forest opens to brushy avalanche slopes, so use caution when and if you visit in winter.

Here, the trail becomes rocky, very brushy, and you may be "sidehilling" (an uncomfortable way of walking on sloped ground, rather than the flat tread of a trail.

The trail ends at a junction with trail 1013 and the High Lakes Trail.

Getting There

From Seattle, drive east on I-90 to exit 34. Turn left onto 468th Street and follow it to the junction with the Middle Fork Snoqualmie Road. Turn right and continue up the Middle Fork Snoqualmie Road for 11.8 miles to the large Middle Fork trailhead parking area on the right. Cross the river on the impressively large metal and wood footbridge, and head upstream.
