This seldom-used trail within Glacier Peak Wilderness leads through an old-growth forest with magnificent, large trees to the site of an old fire lookout build in the 1930s.
Some of the firs in the deep forest on both sides of the trail measure six feet thick at their base. The former lookout site has excellent views of the Pride Basin glaciers and land to the south.
The trail ends at a rock outcropping a short distance beyond the former lookout site. There is no structure here, all that remains of the former fire lookout is the spectacular views of the surrounding valley and craggy mountains.
Some folks push past the official end of the trail to the summit of Painted Mountain, but this is a challenging route that requires comfort with scrambling and navigation.
