Hiking Port Susan Nature Conservancy

The Port Susan Nature Preserve is a small part of the Port Susan Bay Preserve and contains restored tidal wetlands that is home to a variety of fish, birds, and native plants. The preserve is open to the public between February and October, and you must contact the Nature Conservancy for a parking pass and liability waiver to visit.

The trail itself is a gravel path atop a dike that was upgraded during the Port Susan Bay Estuary Restoration Project. Begin by heading north out of the parking area, past the rope, and turn left to go around the gate by the information sign. Already you can hear the chorus of bird chatter, and you’ll likely see many around the tall pole-mounted bird houses.

The trail turns south, and passes a small viewing bench. To the east are agricultural lands which the dike you’re walking on helps protect from flooding. To the west is a vast estuary marsh, and views of Camano Island across the bay. Be sure to bring your binoculars or long lenses to view the variety of wildlife that resides closer to the water.

After a flat 1 mile, reach a bridge with a "No Trespassing" sign on the far end. Turn around, and return the way you came to complete the nature walk through this vital restoration area.
