Hiking Peterson Lake Natural Area

The Peterson Lake Natural Area is a haven for wildlife and an important part of keeping clean water running through the Cedar River Watershed in the ever-growing urban areas of King County. It is essential wetland habitat for many species of fish, birds, mammals, amphibians, and reptiles. Impressive Western Red Cedars frame the beginning of the trail, which runs along the hillside. Watch for animal tracks and plenty of diverse flora.

The trail rolls along the hillside initially as you walk through hemlock and Douglas fir trees. Soon, come upon a power line, where you turn right towards the lake. From here, the trail is somewhat overgrown but still passable for most hikers. Continue on the trail until you reach where Peterson Creek flows into the lake.

It is important to note that there are many social trails that go through this Natural Area. Please do not follow these trails; stay on the main trail. Efforts are being made to revegetate these trails and restore the habitat. There are no official trails on the northern end of the lake. Only the southern end is open to hikers.
