Pearrygin Lake State Park consists of 1,186 acres in the Methow Valley, tucked just around the corner from Winthrop.
The star of the show is the lake, which provides swimming, boating and fishing, opportunities, but there's also a lovely trail available for hikers. At 3.1 miles, the Rex Derr trail is a great option year round.
Currently a horseshoe-shaped trail, it is possible to create a loop by walking the road that parallels the state park. The longterm goal for this system is to provide a loop using only trails. But even now, the trail system here is a year-round gem.
The area is groomed during winter for snowshoeing and fat-biking, and in the summer it makes a lovely ramble for those basecamping at the state park or in nearby Winthrop.
Begin at the east boat launch, then hike along a hillside through shrub-steppe, skirting the old Graves Homestead and looping back around to the east campground.
Hikers who venture into the nearby trails might spot mule deer and other wildlife.
