Hiking Olympic Discovery Trail

A still-under-construction route along the north part of the Olympic Peninsula, the Olympic Discovery Trail (ODT) will eventually span nearly 130 miles and be usable by bikes, walkers, runners, strollers, and in some places, equestrians.

Currently, there are 70 miles of completed trail, with more being planned each year. The completed sections are mostly focused in the central part of the trail, west of Port Angeles. The route varies from wide paved sections to narrow dirt sections that feel more like hiking trails than old railroad beds.

The scenery also changes along the way, going from the city waterfronts of Port Townsend and Port Angeles to the northern shore of Lake Crescent to the shady forests beyond, and eventually to the Olympic Coast.

Reminders of the history of this corridor are also present in many places, including a few railroad tunnels that make for some cavernous stretches.

Where the trail has yet to be constructed, users will have to travel on roads that are also open to traffic. Because of this, a map is helpful to ensure you will be able to link up with the next segment of trail.
