From the same trailhead as Northrup Canyon, the Old Wagon Road Trail heads high, rather than into the canyon. Begin on the same trail as that to Northrup, but after just a few hundred yards, look for a trail branching off to the south. There's a sign where the trail enters the trees, reading 'Old Wagon Road Trail'.
The trail climbs the side of the south canyon wall. In many places, it crosses slopes of loose rock. Along the way, you'll enjoy a myriad of wildflowers, including larkspur.
Climbed until you level out at the top of the canyon wall. Here, the trail turns completely back, about 0.9 miles from the trailhead. It becomes faint, heading west, towards an overlook of Banks Lake and Steamboat Rock, but be sure to have navigational skills here — other hikers have lost the trail from this point.
