Hiking Mount Defiance (Oregon)

This grind of a hike is one of the most strenuous hikes in the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area.

The trail begins at Starvation Creek State Park just off of I-84, and ends at the junction for the Mitchell Point Trail, but most hikers do this trail as a loop.

Leaving from the Starvation Creek Trailhead, head west along Hwy I-84 on Mount Defiance Trail, an asphalt trail that quickly becomes gravel. After a quarter-mile, the trail reaches the beginning of Starvation Ridge Trail #414.

Turn left here onto Starvation Ridge trail, and begin the series of switchbacks that climb 0.7 mile to Starvation Ridge at 1160 feet. You'll continue climbing south, following Starvation Ridge for another 1.8 miles to the trails end at the junction with Mitchell Point trail, found at 3,250 feet.

You can turn around here, but if you'd like to do a loop, turn right onto Mitchell Point trail, and follow it for 1.9 miles to another junction with the Mount Defiance Trail. Turn right at this junction (getting back on Mount Defiance trail) and continue for another 4.1 miles back to the trailhead.
