This is a trail that starts in the small town of Mosier, Oregon. It starts on the east side of the old bridge on Highway 30 in town. Several hundred yards up the trail, it passes a pioneer cemetery with graves dating from the 1800s.
Climb through a gorge past a creek that feeds into the mighty Columbia to the top of a plateau that offers fantastic views down to the huge river making its way to the Pacific Ocean. Built by the Friends of the Gorge with assistance from WTA, the trail is a nice leg stretch for folks touring the Gorge.
After hiking just 0.25 miles and about 100 feet of elevation gain, you will see beautiful, two-tiered Mosier Falls. The first level drops about 70 feet, while the upper falls is shorter, at just 10 feet high. The swirling pool between the two falls is inaccessible from the trail.
Past the falls, the trail climbs steadily with switchbacks and three sets of stairs up a steep, open hillside to a viewpoint on the Mosier Plateau. The hillside and plateau are home to plentiful flowers, such as Columbia desert parsley, yellow bells, and grass widows. Across the river, the Coyote Wall trail is just visible on the Washington side.
From here it is best to return the way you came. The trail does loop back down to highway 30, but you must then walk a half-mile along a busy highway back to your car.
