Hiking Middle Fork Nooksack River Snowshoe

This snowshoe route follows Forest Road 38 at the end of the Middle Fork Nooksack Valley.

From the Mosquito Lake Road, drive east on Forest Road 38 as far as you can given the snow conditions. If you can make it, a good place to start walking is about 12 miles east of the Mosquito Lake turn-off where the road begins switchbacking uphill (this is the same location as the Ridley Creek Trailhead).

Either start here or walk in to this point, then start ascending on Forest Road 38 as it switchbacks up a relatively gentle slope to its end. Keep an eye out for avalanche terrain, especially as the road nears its end after the sixth switchback.

The snow conditions will largely determine the shape of a trip here, depending on how far you are able to drive up the road, but as with any winter road snowshoe, you can turn around at the point of your choosing to dial in the miles just right.
