Hiking Methow Community Trail

The Methow Community Trail runs along the Methow River valley between the towns of Mazama and Winthrop. It is a multi-use trail that provides countless connections to other trails like the Sun Mountain trail system and beyond.

The trail begins just west of the Mazama Store turnoff on Highway 20 on the south side of the Methow River. After about a mile, you first cross Highway 20 then the river, then continue following the Methow along its northern bank. After a little over 3 miles from crossing the highway, the trail arrives at the Tawlks-Foster suspension bridge and crosses back over the Methow River to continue trending down the valley for about 3 more miles.

At this point the double wide trail ends at the highway, picking up on the other side as a gravel road. Over the next 9 miles the route alternates between gravel road and double wide trail as it gradually swings away from the river. At this point hikers must choose whether to hang a left and descend into the town of Winthrop or continue up towards the sun mountain trails.

The Methow Community Trail is the backbone of the trail system in this valley, providing connections to numerous recreation opportunities and a main thoroughfare for non-motorized travel.
