The McDowell Marsh Environmental Education Trail (McMEET) is a 1.2 mile hardened environmental education trail offering hikers an opportunity to explore five distinct ecological habitats, ranging from riparian to semi-arid, which are managed specifically for native plants and wildlife.
Visit an ADA-accessible trail that features a self-guided narrative brochures geared to multiple learning level. Explore the "Who Walked Here" trail, which explains and shows animal tracks visible in the refuge. Other trails explain flora and fauna that live and grow in the marsh, and which insects and birds live in the area.
The hardened trail surface minimizes damage to sensitive soil and plants, and a 280-foot, ADA-accessible elevated boardwalk allows hikers to bridge the marsh drainage outfall. An ADA-accessible observation blind offers hikers a non-intrusive way of viewing riparian wildlife.
After your adventure, a naturalized congregation area with universal accessibility allows a group of hikers or students to view all five ecological habitats through which they have passed while their instructor reviews lessons learned from each section of the trail.
