Hiking Lookout Ridge

High above the Twisp River Valley, this long-lost trail ambles lonely along a dry ridgeline. For the hardy explorer faints bits of trail may be found periodically through this ponderosa and grassland hilltop. This trail most likely once served the Black Pine Lake area, but it has been largely forgotten and returned to open country.

Accessing Lookout Ridge involves hiking the Lookout Mountain Trail (412) for about one mile to an elevation of  about 5300 feet. An unsigned turn-pff leads down to an old hunt camp. This camp has good views and is a great place to make camp if you're spending the night, but there is NO WATER anywhere on this ridge for human or canine so be sure to pack all that you need.

The ridge is approximately five miles long ranging from 4400 feet to 5200 feet with numerous ups and downs. This author has been unable to connect this trail all the way through to Black Pine Lake due to severe blowdowns and steep sidehilling in spots. Access to this trail from the western end is no easier. Forest Service  Road 250 initiates the trail and some flagging may be evident to get you over berms created when the road was cut.

Your rewards will come in the form of solitude, views of the Lake Chelan-Sawtooth Wilderness, and raw rugged beauty. Be careful where you step on the rocky ridge top, as Bitterroot and other native flowers are easily disturbed.

Getting There

From the intersection of Highway 20 (Division Street in Twisp) and 2nd Ave, turn onto W 2nd Ave and drive west. At a three way intersection with May St. and Lookout Mountain Road, veer onto Lookout Mountain Road (County Road 1605). This which connects with Forest Service Road 4400-200. It is 4.2 miles on a good dirt road, then another 2 miles on rougher dirt road to the end and the trailhead.
