Hiking Long Lake

Long Lake is a great option for those looking for a short hike to get back into the swing of things for the hiking season. It's relatively short and gains elevation steadily, so hikers can choose to make it an easy hike or bring a heavier pack for a bit more of a workout.

The trail starts from Lost Lake. The crowds might be a bit larger here and fishing is available. However, as soon as you pass Lost Lake, the crowds disappear and the trail takes you through the quiet forest with views of Jumpoff Lookout. Follow and cross a small creek for the first part of the hike, then dive into the trees up to the lake.

At the lake, there is a small shelter to explore, and you can spend your time relaxing and taking in the peaceful scenery. Many people also enjoy continuing their hike west from the lake to Pickle Prairie Meadows, or you can climb the ridge and hike a more challenging hike to Jumpoff Lookout.

Getting There

From Yakima, use Hwy 12 West toward White Pass. Turn left on Tieton Road (road 1200) off of Hwy 12. After about 1.5 miles is the first left turn (gravel road). Go straight. Immediately after the turn there is a road to the left and then one to the right. Don't take these. At the end of Road 570, go left and then immediately right back to Lost Lake. There is plenty of room for 5 or so cars to park and several dispersed camping sites at the lake.
