Long Lake is a great option for those looking for a short hike to get back into the swing of things for the hiking season. It's relatively short and gains elevation steadily, so hikers can choose to make it an easy hike or bring a heavier pack for a bit more of a workout.
The trail starts from Lost Lake. The crowds might be a bit larger here and fishing is available. However, as soon as you pass Lost Lake, the crowds disappear and the trail takes you through the quiet forest with views of Jumpoff Lookout. Follow and cross a small creek for the first part of the hike, then dive into the trees up to the lake.
At the lake, there is a small shelter to explore, and you can spend your time relaxing and taking in the peaceful scenery. Many people also enjoy continuing their hike west from the lake to Pickle Prairie Meadows, or you can climb the ridge and hike a more challenging hike to Jumpoff Lookout.
