Overgrown, rugged and likely difficult to navigate at times, the Klickitat Loop Trail links together multiple trails (including the eponymous trail itself) to create a large loop just outside of the Goat Rocks Wilderness, with multiple off-shoot trail options if you'd like to take a different path.
Start at the Cody Day Use Trailhead. Descend briefly for a quarter-mile before reaching the road you came in on, Orr Creek Road. Cross the street and continue on the trail.
Cross the Cispus River in 0.6 miles, and then Johnson Creek Road in just under a mile from there. Get ready for a steady climb for the next 4 miles, where you'll hit a junction. Continue forward for a short climb to the summit of Elk Peak (5472'), or turn right to continue on the trail.
In another 0.9 miles, cross North Fork Cispus Road. From here, continue for 2.4 miles to another junction. If you wish to continue your hike on the Klickitat Trail, head straight. To stay on the Klickitat Loop Trail, turn right. In 0.7 miles, cross Johnson Creek Road again. On the other side of the street is Hugo Lake to your left.
1.8 miles ahead, the trail runs left to Chambers Lake, and you'll shortly come to Berry Patch Trailhead, another entry point to the loop. From here, walk through the trailhead parking lot to the Snowgrass Trail. Take a short half-mile on the Snowgrass Trail before taking a sharp right to the nearby Snowgrass Trailhead.
Turn left onto Hikers road and walk less than half a mile to get back on the Klickitat Loop Trail to your left. In another half-mile, cross Chambers Lake Road. Spend just a short time on this side of Chambers Lake Road before crossing it again.
Descend about 3 miles before crossing the Cispus River again, just as you did near the beginning of the loop. In just under a mile, you'll reach Coleman Weedpatch Trailhead, yet another entry point to the loop. Continue heading south, this time on Coleman Weedpatch Trail for about 1.5 miles.
Take the right at the junction to get back on the Klickitat Loop trail. Hit Midway Loop Road in 4.3 miles. Cross Midway Creek and shortly after, turn right. In about a mile, reach a junction with the High Lakes Trail. Turn left to start hiking on the High Lakes Trail, or turn right to continue on the Klickitat Loop Trail.
Continue straight for another 1.5 miles, then turn left to stay on the trail. You'll be back at the Cody Day Use Trailhead in just another mile.
