Hiking Ironstone Mountain

The Ironstone Mountain Trail provides a challenging rollercoaster of a ridge hike, taking you right up close to the summits of Burnt Mountain, Ironstone Mountain and McNeil Peak, with rewarding views of the surrounding area.

The trail takes you to the summit of Burnt Mountain early on in the hike, about 2 miles in, after 625 feet in elevation gain.

If you want to hike on the Shellrock Peak trail or summit Shellrock Peak, the junction is about 3.1 miles in from the trailhead, after about 939 feet in elevation gain.

After that, the trail gets close to the summit of Ironstone Mountain around 5.6 miles into the hike, after 1,271 feet in elevation gain.

Continuing along, the trail passes close to the summit of McNeil Peak 9.3 miles into the hike, after 2,545 feet in elevation gain.

The trail ends at a junction with the Rattlesnake Trail (#1114). You can extend your hike further by continuing onto the Rattlesnake Trail, or head back to the trailhead the way you came in.

You can also reach Ironstone Mountain Trail via the Russell Ridge trail; the two trails meet between Ironstone Mountain and McNeil Peak.

Note: This trail is very dry, so make sure to pack enough water for your hike.
