Interurban Trail - Snohomish County

In 1910, well before the traffic-choked I-5 corridor, people who wanted to visit Seattle from Everett could look forward to a pleasant ride on an interurban trolley line.

It was a good solution for those commuting to work or school, and many wanted to live near it, which resulted in population centers popping up all along its length. Heard of Lynwood or Mountlake Terrace? These suburbs of the big city have the trolley line to thank for their existence.

However, the invention of the automobile and the allure of private transit meant the trolley line only lasted until 1939. Its last run was on February 20, and now the only remaining trolley from this era can be seen at Heritage Park in Lynwood, just off its former route.

Luckily, hikers and bikers can still ride or walk the entire route from Seattle to Everett (though you may want to allow a few days, and plan overnights if you're walking). If you'd rather have a shorter visit, you can access the trail from the Lake Ballinger Park in Edmonds, the Lynwood Transit Center, at 13th Avenue and Meadow Road in Mill Creek, or near Memorial Stadium in Everett.

There are currently 11.8 miles of paved sections of trail, but completing the full 18.8 miles is a goal of Snohomish County, the cities of Everett and Lynnwood, and Public Utility District No.1 of Snohomish County.

Most of the trail is separated from motorized traffic, but are several places where the trail is a designated bike route on the road shoulder. Follow the Interurban logo signs along the route.

Horses are allowed on the Snohomish County link of the Interurban; however, horses are not allowed on the segments of the trail maintained and operated by the cities of Lynnwood and Everett.

Visit for a couple of hours, or make a long trip of it.
