This is one of several hikeable sections of the old, original Columbia River Highway that spanned the Oregon side of the Gorge. After years of disuse as a highway, this paved trail is slowly being restored so hikers and cyclists can enjoy it.
Markers embedded in the pavement show where the trail is on the original Columbia River Highway alignment.
It is open to hikers and bicycles, and this segment of the trail incorporates some unique engineering features to address issues where I-84 overlays the original highway alignment. The most striking feature is the Summit Creek Viaduct that elevates the trail above I-84.
Much of the trail is shaded except for the section around Shellrock Mountain and the Summit Creek Viaduct.
