Hiking High Ridge Trail

The High Ridge Trail gets lots of visitors in summer, since it starts near the beginning of the parking lot at the Visitors Center on top of Hurricane Ridge. Beginning as a paved trail and gradually turning into a dirt trail, it connects with the Sunrise Trail. It'll give you a good workout, and you'll have plenty of company in summer.

This route is the beginning of several trails near the east end of the parking lot at Hurricane Ridge Visitor Center on top of Hurricane Ridge. Near the beginning, the trail forks. Hikers can go left or right; either route will reach the top, and both sections are referred to as the High Ridge Trail.

As you get to the top of the first hill, spy Mount Angeles out in the distance. This is where the Sunrise Trail heads to the Klahhane Ridge Trail. This more rugged route branches off to your right from the High Ridge Trail about a half-mile from the trailhead, then heads slightly downhill but not for long. The High Ridge Trail ends in about a quarter-mile. While this route is its own distinct name, some hikers call this the "short version" of the Sunrise Trail.

Use Note: Most people hike this trail is to connect with the Sunrise and Klahhane Ridge Trails, which lead to Mount Angeles or down to Lake Angeles. Mount Angeles does not have a designated trail to the top. Its a scramble and is not really recommend for beginning hikers. Be aware in early summer black bear frequent this area quite a lot.

WTA Pro Tip: Save a copy of our directions before you leave! App-based driving directions aren't always accurate and data connections may be unreliable as you drive to the trailhead.

Getting There

Head to Port Angeles via HIghway 101. If coming from the east, turn left onto Race Street (if from the west, turn right onto Race Street). Follow this road through town until it becomes the Mount Angeles Road. At a Y, veer right onto Hurricane Ridge Road.

Drive this road for 16 steep and winding miles up to Hurricane Visitors Center. From the parking area, the trail begins at the entrance of the parking lot, to your right. At its start, the trail name is called Cirque but becomes the Sunrise Trail then the High Ridge Trail and Klahhane Ridge Trail. They all interconnect with each other so a map would be nice.
