Hiking Hegg-Benson Trail

The Hegg-Benson Trail, designed and constructed by Skagit Land Trust members and volunteers in 2009-2010, provides a short walk through mossy forest to a picturesque waterfall on Barr Creek in this lovely conservation area.

The trail here is beautifully designed and executed, meandering through the lush woods.

At the trailhead, take a moment to soak up the history of this special place from the interpretive sign placed here by the Skagit Land Trust. Then begin your walk with new appreciation for all the people who made this place available for the public and wildlife to enjoy. In a 1/4 mile, visit the short spur-trail to a waterfall on Barr Creek. The main trail then begins to climb through old and new woods on well-built switchbacks. Look for the big Cedars and Douglas Firs mixed in with younger growth.

The Barr Creek Conservation Area is an ideal night roost for eagles foraging on the nearby Skagit River and is expected to provide good Marbled Murrelet nesting as well as a Northern Spotted Owl habitat. Look for the small Red Legged Frogs hopping for cover from the trail as you approach.

At .6 miles you will come to the signed boundary ending the conservation area and start of the US Forest Service Old Sauk Mountain Trail, now officially unmaintained.
